What is Hypnosis
Hypnosis is a trance like state where you feel very relaxed. It is similar to
daydreaming, and gives you a feeling of losing yourself just like when you are reading a book or watching a movie. You are fully conscious during
hypnosis, but tune out to what is going on around you, just following the
suggestions the hypnotherapist is giving you.
In fact as you will discover all hypnosis is self hypnosis, which means that
with practice you will be able to take yourself into hypnosis just by listening
to an audio recording or a recording you have created yourself.
When you daydream or watch a movie the imaginary world seems real to you, as it fully engages your emotions. Imaginary events can cause real fear, sadness or happiness, and you may even jolt in your seat if you are surprised by something (the alien popping out from John Hurts stomach in the film Alien). But it’s this trance like state that hypnotherapists focus on use during
their relaxation and focusing techniques.
In this trance like state you will feel uninhibited and relaxed, this is because
your worries and problems are put to one side during a hypnosis session.
During this session the hypnotherapist will access the clients subconscious
mind directly. The conscious mind is used for thought processes, where did
I leave my keys, what shirt to wear etc.
It’s the automatic stuff we do that is done unconsciously, breathing for instance, we don’t need to think about doing it. The same goes for driving
a car. It is done unconsciously because we don’t need to think about the minor details we need to do (change gear, indicate, look in the mirror) these
are automatic responses we do unconsciously.
It’s the deep relaxation and focusing exercises that work to calm and subdue the conscious mind so that it takes a less active role in your thinking process. In this state, you’re still aware of what’s going on, but your conscious mind takes a backseat to your subconscious mind. Effectively, this allows you and the hypnotherapist to work directly with the subconscious.
Additionally, the subconscious is the storehouse for all your memories. While under hypnosis, clients may be able to access past events that they have completely forgotten. Hypnotherapists can then revisit these memories so that a related personal problem can finally be resolved by reprogramming the subconscious with empowering suggestions or beliefs.
